Acting Governor Richard J. Codey today welcomed home the New Jersey National Guard’s 1/114th Infantry Battalion, whose soldiers returned from a six-month deployment in the Sinai Peninsula. Codey joined U.S. Senator Jon S. Corzine; Major General Glenn K. Rieth, Adjutant General of the New Jersey National Guard; Brigadier General Frank Carlini, Joint Chief of Staff of the State National Guard; Colonel Frank Caruso, Commander of the 50th Brigade; the 325 soldiers and their families, for a Welcome Home ceremony at McGuire Air Force Base. “Your state and your nation are proud of you – just as your family, friends and neighbors are proud of you,” Codey told the troops. “In serving this great country, in putting your lives on the line overseas for our freedom, you have shown more courage and commitment than most Americans will ever be asked to show.”

“And to the families who are gathered here: I can imagine how glad you are to have your loved ones back. You families also sacrifice for your country in ways that are often unrecognized. Every American owes you – families and soldiers – so much,” Codey said. The battalion’s mission in the Sinai Peninsula was to man observation points between Israel and Egypt. They were among 3,100 New Jersey Army National Guard soldiers mobilized into federal status in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Noble Eagle. The 114th Infantry is headquartered in Woodbury and has units in Freehold, Mount Holley and Burlington. The soldiers deployed from New Jersey to their mobilization station at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin on May 21, 2004. Their service in the Sinai Peninsula began in July 2004.

While overseas, the unit became one of the few teams from the United States to ever win the Multinational Force and Observers Force Skills Competition, a test of soldiers’ skills in which they competed against forces from eight nations including Britain, Italy and Australia. “Our prayers have been with you. We have asked God to love you as you love your family, friends and country. And we’ve asked God to protect you as you’ve protected us. Troops, welcome back to New Jersey – my favorite state in this great country. You are the greatness of New Jersey and the greatness of America. Now hug your families, go home and enjoy the Super Bowl,” Codey concluded.
